Module 1: Introduction to Person-Centered Care Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
Explain what person-centered care means and how it differs from clinician-centered care.
Demonstrate how understanding the person influences treatment planning.
Analyze their own clinical practice in terms of person-centered care.
Module 2: Person-Centered Care: Overview of the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA) Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
Explain how the LPAA differs from the medical model of health care.
Describe the A-FROM Model and its relationship to the WHO ICF.
Provide three descriptive terms for each of the four A-FROM domains.
Module 3: LPAA Core Value One: The explicit goal is enhancement of life participation Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
Identify what participation in life activities could mean for people with aphasia.
Select treatment goals that address life participation.
Explain how clinicians can learn more about their clients’ life participation.
Module 4: LPAA Core Value Two: All those affected by aphasia are entitled to service Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
Explain what is meant by “all those affected by aphasia” in LPAA Core Value Two.
Examine how clinical practice might be affected by serving families affected by aphasia.
Examine how systems of care could offer service to “all those affected by aphasia.”
Module 5: LPAA Core Value Three: The measures of success include documented life enhancement changes Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
Document changes in life enhancement for people affected by aphasia.
Evaluate whether life enhancement change has occurred in clients.
Explain the difference between life enhancement changes and improvements in impairment.
Module 6: LPAA Core Value Four: Both personal and environmental factors are targets of intervention Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
Recognize personal factors to address in intervention.
Contrast environmental factors that help and hinder communication
Identify ways to improve environmental support for people with aphasia.
Module 7: LPAA Core Value Five: Emphasis is on availability of services as needed at all stages of aphasia Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
Define what is meant by “all stages of aphasia” in Core Value Five.
Examine their own clinical practice setting with respect to how it follows or does not follow Core Value Five.
Provide their opinion regarding how Core Value Five might affect advocacy efforts for people with aphasia.
Module 8: Critical Domains of the A-FROM Model Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
Design treatments that address two or more A-FROM domains simultaneously.
Assign behaviors, observations, and interventions to the appropriate A-FROM domain.
Analyze the effects of personal and environmental factors on participation in life activities.
